February 2025 assignment –‘wood’
•Use your imagination to capture creative photographs of ‘wood’ in the widest possible interpretation
•Try different lighting eg; natural light/artificial light etc.
•Experiment with different positions and angles, macro, monochrome, shadow and shade effects etc
•Look for textures and patterns
•Experiment with depth of field
•Look for different types and use of wood

(note; photographs should be taken for the assignment –not from ‘stock’)

This assignment was presented at the March meeting.

The group voted on whether the Black and White or Colour versions were preferred and the preferred version is ticked in the slide deck.

Our summer assignment is entitled ‘Being on holiday’ – submissions should be in Flickr by Sunday 9th October at the very latest please – earlier if you can, using tag ass-2023-10 (one photo per member)

This month we are looking for photos to showcase transport.

Not just the classic trains, planes, automobiles and boats – but something unusual and creative.

Yellow is one of the primary colours and is usually associated with, joy, sunshine, warmth and nature (eg autumn, spring flowers etc) but sometimes warning, treachery and betrayal.

•Yellow can also be applied as a creative tool in photography. The ’Golden hour’, is the period of daylight that occurs just after sunrise and just before sunset and has a distinctively yellow hue. During this window, daylight is at its softest and warmest.

•Yellow has strong historical and cultural significance in China, where it is the colour of glory, royalty, happiness, and wisdom. However, in many Latin American cultures, yellow is associated with death, sorrow, and mourning and similarly in some parts of the Middle East.

•In Japanese culture, yellow signifies courage, refinement and wealth (associated with gold

•In Africa, yellow is worn to signify high ranking members of a community. Saffron, a bright orange – yellow is considered sacred in India etc, representing selflessness and courage.

The Woodland Trust has named the 500 year old Yew tree at Waverley Abbey as Tree of the Year 2022. So we thought it might be interesting to run this as an assignment over the next few months so members can get over there and perhaps take shots in different seasons, different lighting conditions etc.

You might recall that Gachou led a photoshoot to Waverley Abbey back in 2020 so I expect some of you may already have some good shots if this magnificent tree and its roots.etc

If you don’t have a photo of the Abbey tree, a good photo of another ancient tree will be acceptable too.

Up to two photos for review at our April meeting may be submitted per member using tag tree-2022-11 in the Guildford U3A Photography Flickr group.
